An update on what's going on in the Office of the Ombudsman to increase openness, accountability, and good administration. Speech by Chief Ombudsman Judge Peter Boshier.

On 4 May Chief Ombudsman Judge Peter Boshier talked to the Institute of Public Administration New Zealand about his Office's work to increase compliance with the OIA and to strengthen its monitoring of the treatment of vulnerable people held in detention.

Describing the OIA as a lynchpin of openness and accountability, Judge Boshier noted the number of agencies seeking training and guidance on OIA best practice, and the Office's success in creating much faster and more responsive systems for complainants.

He also stressed the importance of the Office's monitoring roles under the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture, and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
