Chief Ombudsman launches documentary on the NZ Ombudsman’s first 60 years

Issue date:

Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier is proud to present a new documentary, Our first 60 years - the NZ Ombudsman in Aotearoa, to mark this significant milestone in the history of the office in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The documentary, filmed over the last six months and featuring Mr Boshier and Deputy Ombudsman Bridget Hewson, is available to watch on our interactive microsite.

Filmed in locations around Wellington including Parliament House and Mr Boshier’s former Victory University Law School office in the old cabinet room, the documentary is a reflection on the key milestones, highlights and memories of Ombudsmen over the last 60 years.

Broken into three parts – Establishment, Transition and Evolution – the documentary celebrates the history of the Ombudsman from the first New Zealand Ombudsman Sir Guy Powles, who was sworn in in October 1962, to current Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier.

It also features archival footage, images and audio of early Ombudsmen including Sir Guy and his successor Sir George Laking and John Robson, Justice Secretary in the 1960s.

Other past Ombudsmen are interviewed about the development of the office and the expansion of its mandate, including Sir Brian Elwood, Dame Beverley Wakem and Leo Donnelly.

The documentary is a valuable resource for those seeking more information about the formation of the office and its important role in ensuring New Zealand remains one of the most open and transparent nations.

It also explains the development of the various laws under which the Ombudsman operates – the Ombudsmen Act, the Official Information Act and the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act.

The documentary was officially launched at a 60th anniversary event hosted by Mr Boshier at Parliament on October 12.

Invited guest included former New Zealand Ombudsmen, ombudsmen from overseas, and other dignitaries.
